The restaurant business is by no means an easy one. Building a successful restaurant requires careful attention to factors such as location, food quality, marketing, and promotion. Even then, a business does not become established easily, and owners often have to wait a long time before seeing success. For this reason, many entrepreneurs are reluctant to invest in the restaurant industry.
However, when certain restaurants appear to become highly successful almost overnight, it is not unusual for questions and suspicions to arise. In today’s business environment, customer reviews play a major role. Yet the search engine Google has often been criticized for issues related to review manipulation.
In other words, some organizations allegedly engage in fraudulent practices by generating reviews in exchange for money without any actual purchase or customer experience. Such manipulation is particularly unacceptable in the food industry. If someone relies on these altered reviews, chooses to dine at a restaurant, and subsequently falls ill, who will take responsibility?
It is no secret that people can earn money by writing online reviews. Many are aware of this practice. Those with limited income, individuals seeking additional earnings, or people struggling to find employment are often the ones who take up such work. As a result, restaurant customers may be unaware of review manipulation or unable to detect it.
In Salt Lake, Kolkata, some restaurants located deep inside narrow lanes appear to be enjoying remarkable business success. Exactly how this popularity has been achieved is not entirely clear, because these establishments are not situated on major roads and are not part of any large food chain. Nevertheless, they prepare, supply, and market food to a particular segment of customers. This raises the question of how such exceptional success is being attained.
One illegal practice that has long been associated with the restaurant industry is the alleged mixing of prohibited intoxicating substances into food, thereby creating dependency among customers and encouraging them to return repeatedly to the same establishment.
The significance of this report is that the relevant government authorities should not limit themselves merely to issuing food supply and marketing licenses to lesser-known restaurants that have achieved rapid success within a short period. They should also conduct proper audits and inspections. Otherwise, if a major problem emerges in the future, it goes without saying that responsibility may ultimately fall upon the authorities themselves.
